Program Description: This program will explore the ways fiduciary duties apply to investing by charities, including the use of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors when acting as a prudent investor and the use of impact investing to carry out a charity’s mission.
Speakers:
Prof. Susan N. Gary Professor of Law Emerita University of Oregon School of Law Susan N. Gary, Professor Emerita at the University of Oregon School of Law (formerly Orlando J. and Marian H. Hollis Professor), received her B.A. from Yale and her J.D. from Columbia. She has written and spoken about the regulation of charities, fiduciary duties and the prudent investor standard (and the application of these rules to ESG investing), the definition of family for inheritance purposes, and donor-restricted charitable gifts. She is a member of the American Law Institute, an Academic Fellow and former Regent of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and she served as a trustee on the University of Oregon’s Board of Trustees and as a member of Council of the Real Property, Trust and Estate Section of the ABA. |

Director, Wealth Strategies Group Bernstein Private Wealth Management Jennifer B. Goode is a Director with Bernstein Private Wealth in the Washington, D.C. office. Prior to joining Bernstein, Jennifer was a Founding Partner of Birchstone Moore LLC, a Washington, D.C., boutique law firm focused on estate planning and estate and trust administration. In connection with her work at Birchstone Moore, Jennifer was previously recognized as a Top Lawyer and a Top Financial Advisor by Washingtonian Magazine. Jennifer’s involvement in the larger Washington D.C. estate planning community includes her tenure as a past Co-Chair of the D.C. Bar’s Taxation Section’s Estate Planning Committee and as a current Co-Chair of the Washington, D.C. Estate Planning Council’s Programming Committee. Additionally, Jennifer is an adjunct professor at Howard University School of Law, where she teaches a course on estate planning. Jennifer earned her B.A. in Social Thought and Analysis from Washington University in St. Louis and her J.D. from Duke University School of Law. |
