Testamentary Charitable Planning in this Unique Environment
Program Description: Crafting a charitable plan that will take effect at one's passing requires many considerations, including the intent to benefit one or more specific charitable causes, reduction or elimination of estate tax, wealth transfer, family governance, legacy, and carrying out that charitable plan without compromising the estate plan for one's family members. A primary role of the advisor is to educate the client about those considerations and guide the client to a plan that strikes the appropriate balance of those considerations consistent with the client's goals while incorporating sufficient flexibility for this unique and changing tax, economic, and legal environment. This presentation will discuss those considerations in the context of hypothetical client examples. While a certain approach will work well in one fact pattern, it may flounder under a different set of facts. This presentation also will provide tips and highlight potential pitfalls of different testamentary charitable contribution approaches. Lastly, the presentation will examine challenges with contributing to charitable organizations certain classes of assets at one's passing, which if not thoroughly vetted may doom an otherwise thoughtful charitable plan.
