About the Presenters:
David Levitt
David A. Levitt is a principal with Adler & Colvin, a firm that specializes in the representation of nonprofit organizations and their donors. He focuses on mission-related investments, social enterprise, political advocacy, and nonprofit corporate governance.
David served as the Chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section Nonprofit Organizations Committee, from 2020 through 2023. His publications include: “Taking Care of Business: Use of a For-Profit Subsidiary by a Nonprofit Organization”, Business Law Today, June 2014 (co-author); and “Impact Investing Through a Donor-Advised Fund”, Taxation of Exempts, March/April 2014. David speaks regularly on nonprofit and tax exemption legal matters.
Shirley McLaughlin
Shirley McLaughlin is a Principal at Adler & Colvin. She specializes in nonprofit corporate formation and tax-exempt status, public charities, private foundations, donor-advised funds, grant-making and social investing, social enterprise, charitable solicitations and fundraising, nonprofit structures, relationships and affiliations, and international charitable transactions and operations.
Prior to joining Adler & Colvin, Shirley worked for San Francisco Foundation and Silicon Valley Community Foundation for over ten years, overseeing grants administration and other compliance matters, and assisting individuals and families with their donor-advised fund giving.
Ms. McLaughlin is a member of the American Bar Association, the California Lawyers Association, and the Bar Association of San Francisco.
